Many of the modern companies right now are having difficulty in finding the right candidate for the job that they have for. It’s either they are flooded with below-their-expectation applicants or way-too-qualified walk-ins or just fraudulent posters. Their one way of determining who from among the throng of applicants would best fit to the job is none other than background checking. Through this process, companies will know the educational attainment, the previous salary, previous work and standing, records search, credit history, identity, and other information of a person. The process itself involve extensive and serious search and sorting of relevant and correct information in order not to interchange with another person’s to avoid conflict. The rest of the work however is not on the shoulder of the company but on the third party provider that the former hires.
Basically, the information that is gathered through this process is not made up. It came from legitimate files of government databases and public records like but not limited to court decisions and archives, sex offender registry, motor vehicle record registry, the social security registry, regulatory commissions, and many others. The treatment however of the information is the single thing that matter in and after the process.
Other than the employment sector, there are also other aspects of life and society which benefit from background check. This process can be used privately by a particular person to look into another person for dating and relational purposes such as verifying whether or not the one he or she is dating is married or has criminal cases that would affect their relationship in the future. Friends and family members may also use the people find or phone search to find long lost kin and pals across the country by simply providing the complete name, social security number and other pertinent information about a person being looked for.
More than the aforementioned uses of the process, local enforcement agencies and the government as a whole rely on the ability of background checking in bringing in information that they would need of a person for the completion of their public duties. Citing as example, police officers may use their own database to check on traffic violators and implement penalties thereon depending on the gravity of the offence and its frequency. Sherriff depends on this same process in gun applicants – as filter and determinant whether the applicant is qualified to own arms. They may also use the same process to countercheck a suspect’s identity and to determine whether such a suspect has pending cases to face. The government on the other hand uses this procedure the way other companies do – for employment.
Ironically though, despite the multiple usage of background checking many people still does not take it seriously. This negligence often results in negative incidents and unjust decisions which would in the long run advance discrimination and other relative human rights abuse and violations. Such a case for example is when an enforcer illegally browsed on police reports and records to check information of a reporter who happened to have reported bad things about the said officer in Toronto.
Taking this process seriously will not just yield positive result for the part of the one who requested for the process but also will foster knowledge on the part of the searched and checked. Otherwise, when provision of the law on this matter is over-passed, result would likely turn to be disparaging on both sides.
